69 - auralla (real time audio composition)

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

The other day I thought it would be fun to use real-world semi-random data to serve as triggers for audio events. I also wanted to learn Python. So what I did was I wrote a little program that matches regex’s against the logs of mint.com (the company I work for). Different log statements (caused by user actions) trigger certain sounds. Since all the sounds are all in the same scale, the random user events on the site are creating music…So if you’re using mint.com, you’re helping me write music! Here’s a video explaining what I did:

Down the line, I want to try and integrate this with Quartz Composer to get some killer visualizations going.

If you’re interested in looking at my code or contributing, check it out here http://code.google.com/p/auralla/. I’d really like for other people to run with my idea and do some cooler stuff with it, too….

My Audio Setup

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

I’ve had a few youtubers ask me about what kind of setup I have. Sometimes it’s hard to see exactly what I’m using in the videos. Since I just cleaned my room for the first time in a long time, I figured I’d take a picture…Here’s what I got going on:
Atish’s Audio Setup

MacBook Pro - Used to record videos (iMovie) and do visualizations (Quartz Composer)
Korg Kaoss Pad 3 - Sick little FX box. Functions as a sampler as well
Korg Electribe EMX-1 - The box I use the most. Sequencer, synth, drum machine all in 1. Quite a best - great entry level toy.
Yamaha SU200 Sampler - As mentioned, I’ve only used it once. I’d use it more if I could import samples via USB
M-Audio O2 Midi Controller - Simple bare bones controller that gets the job done
Dave Smith Evolver - Super crazy sequencer I’m still figuring out how to use. Also bought the software that lets me configure it from PC.
Behringer Eurorack UB802 - Simple mixer

My Last Hostage

Man I forgot about this song…I was listening to it on repeat for a week straight last year, and I stumbled upon it again today.

Punifery

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

For the last couple years, my friends and I would meet over winter break in Chicago and jam - we called ourselves Punifery. All the songs we did were improv except a couple. I think considering the fact that we hardly play our instruments and that we just came up w/ the songs on the spot, we’re not too bad

Bass - Me
Drums - James Bowman
Guitar - Dave Barnes
Keys - Mark Slee (DJ Pali)

Thx to Dave for putting this first one together, love the editing.
